„Wall of sound“ war im Oktober 2016 der erste Song, den ich auf diesem Blog veröffentlicht habe. Sogar gleich zweimal, denn neben der ursprünglichen Version mit meiner Band hatte ich kurz darauf auch eine Alternativ-Aufnahme mit anderen Musikern ins Netz gestellt. Doch damit nicht genug: Hier folgt nun die dritte Version.

Während der Proben mit Oh Sun! hatte sich nämlich in letzter Zeit eine gewisse Unlust eingestellt, das Stück „Wall of sound“ zu spielen. Ich finde nach wie vor, dass es ein guter Song ist, vor allem ein guter Text. Aber wir hatten den Song vielleicht ein wenig zu häufig gespielt und fanden das Arrangement sowie die immer gleichen vier Akkorde irgendwann etwas langweilig.

Deshalb habe ich jetzt einfach andere Harmonien zu dem Song geschrieben. Das Ergebnis ist gewissermaßen ein neuer Song – mit altem Text. Was ihr hier anhören könnt, ist ein spontaner Mitschnitt aus dem Proberaum. Allerdings war an dem Tag unser Drummer nicht da. Deshalb ist es eine sehr reduzierte Version nur mit Gitarren und Bass geworden.

Heute veröffentliche ich an dieser Stelle endlich den Song „History“ – unsere „Feuerzeug-Ballade“, die beim geneigten Publikum immer besonders gut ankommt. Seit ich das Stück 2013 geschrieben habe, lief im Proberaum von Oh Sun! schon häufiger ein Aufnahmegerät mit, aber es gab immer irgendwas, das bei diesen Mitschnitten nicht stimmte. Jetzt habe ich mich für eine reduzierte Version entschieden, die wir vor ein paar Wochen ohne Schlagzeug aufgenommen haben. Das hat den Vorteil, dass Gitarren und vor allem der Gesang präsenter klingen als sonst. Mir war das wichtig, weil ich finde, dass es einer meiner besten Songtexte ist.

Ich habe übrigens den Eindruck, dass „History“ von manchen Leuten als bitterer Abgesang auf gescheiterte Liebesbeziehungen missverstanden wird. Das war eigentlich nicht meine Intention beim Schreiben. Okay: Allzu romanische Sichtweisen der Liebe versuche ich ein wenig zu entmystifizieren. Aber ich bezeichne die Liebe auch als das I-Tüpfelchen im Leben („the final touch“) und singe demutsvoll „you cannot live without“. Das ist Lobpreisung der Liebe, kein Abgesang. Die Grundbotschaft des Stücks lautet: Jedes Ende ist zugleich ein neuer Anfang. Mehr Hoffnung geht nicht. Für mich ist „History“ ein romantischer und unterm Strich positiver Song. An einigen Stellen ist er sogar humorvoll.
